A friend invited me to get a yat at a website y.at.
What is a yat?
Iβd describe a yat as a universal/global username using emojis.
Their website describes themselves as the following:
Yat lets you use emojis as your universal username and identity on the internet. Imagine being known as
or
instead of coffeequeen98 or jake.smith2438@gmail.com. By owning a Yat β letβs say
β itβs yours forever. You are the ~only~ one on earth who owns these emojis. You can receive payments, use it on your socials, and eventually much more.
Β
To be fair, this project has the total potential of being something like an irrelevant internet fad that never really catches on, except I am willing to bet it has a good chance of making big changes in the crypto communities.
So Iβve explained y.at to 3 people who are not βtechiesβ and they all do not get it. However, when I check out some of my technologically inclined discord servers and friends, they all get excited about this project.
If you check out some of their social (particularly facebook) there are many people that are calling it out for being gimmicky, stupid, or pointless. I canβt tell if these are people that are just always that way, or people the genuinely donβt get it, but I do think some of those opinions will change as we see more new and interesting implementations of the technology.
There are a bunch of tech projects that people love now but originally did not βgetβ.
It appears y.at is already working hard creating meaningful business partnerships to integrate with y.at emoji names for unique payment methods. I think there will be many other use cases that pop up down the road.
